If you like to cook you’ve likely heard that Instant Pot®, a multi-function pressure cooker made by a subsidiary of a Canadian company, is the latest must-have kitchen device.
First though, know that the product currently being snatched up on Amazon and at a similar price on Kohl’s, is not the appliance that was recently recalled. The recalled multi-cooker (not a pressure cooker) is Gem 65 8-in-1 purchased at Walmart. Its batch numbers are four digits: 1728, 1730, 1731, 1734 and 1736. The product should be returned to Walmart. Now for the Instant Pot® that friends, family and folks in the food world are trying out or planning to get.
The good news: There is now the Ultra 6 quart, 10-in-1 multi-use electric pressure cooker that is programmable, so it can cook faster or can act as a slow cooker. It can be your rice or oatmeal cooker or sauté, sear or simmer your ingredients. It can steam them, can do eggs or yogurt. It can be used for cakes and it can keep food warm. Vegetables keep their nutrients because less water is needed.
The idea is that you don’t need a rack-full of pots and pans and you don’t need to worry about time so it’s perfect for soups and stews.
The Instant Pot® Ultra has an indicator display that tells progress of the dish’s preparation. A “Quick Release” button can be used to let steam out. The questionable news: People who have it say that they use it all the time but it took some getting used to because of all the buttons and functions.
During a recent Good Food Expo in Chicago, the Instant Pot 6 quart’s various functions came into play when Zen of Slow Cooking Founder Meg Barnhart made her company’s recipe for Italian bean soup. It was ready for tasting in less than half an hour. The booth had bags of spices with recipes that she and Zen co-creator Jane McKay sell on line and in Chicago area grocery stores.
Slow cooking is still doable with the Instant Pot but it was nice to have the fast, pressure-cooking time option.
