Breakfast counts too

Breakfast counts too

Pierrot Gourmet, a European style  indoor-outdoor café at the corner of Rush and Superior Streets is not attached to the Peninsula Hotel but it is a Peninsula property and it is my fave place to have breakfast when downtown Chicago.

Yummy French toast with berries is a nice splurge at Pierre Gourmet but there also are good egg dishes if cutting carbs.

When I brought family members there who came in for a special occasion and stayed downtown the problem was what to order. The PG scramble of smoked salmon, spinach, cheddar and egg whites sounded good and also healthy. Quiche Lorraine really tempted as did the croissants. Fortunately we all ordered different dishes and passed them to taste.

I opted for the yummy brioche French toast with berries. Loved it and luckily it was large enough to pass and share.

I’m definitely ready to go back but I since I”m usually downtown to cover a show with my theatre critic hat on, it will likely be to pop in for an afternoon treat to get one of the café’s famed French macarons. BTW the dessert peaking out from the bottom shelf on the photo above is the French macaron.

PG, as the cafe is often called, is also a favorite neighborhood spot. The locals stop in for really good coffee , a flaky croissant and sit outside to read the morning paper. Yes some do that instead of checking emails. Pierrot Gourmet Café is next to the Peninsula Chicago entrance which is 108 East Superior St. No reservations. For questions call (312) 337-2888.

Elegant and delish

You may walk into Perry’s Steak House and Grille in Vernon Hills not knowing what to expect. It is an impressive, valeted, stand-alone outside the Hawthorn Mall on Milwaukee Avenue. It doesn’t look like any of the hamburger or breakfast/lunch spots in the shopping centers
